our reach

In serving our member banks, ABS works closely with the ASEAN Banking Association and is secretariat of the Singapore SWIFT User Group as well as Dr Goh Keng Swee Scholarship Fund.

Asean Bankers Association (ABA)

The Association represents Singapore banks in the Asean Bankers Association(ABA) comprising the banking associations of Asean member countries.

The principal organs of ABA are the Asean Banking Conference and the Asean Banking Council.

The conference meets biennially to exchange ideas and views with the aim of achieving ABA's objectives which include promoting economic growth in Asean, raising the level of sophistication and professionalism of their banking systems and encouraging friendship and co-operation among Asean bankers. Ideas arising from these exchanges which survive scrutiny are then presented to the Council for more detailed study and adoption.

The Council, as the ABA's executive arm, meets annually to formulate policies and co-ordinate activities being implemented by three permanent and various ad hoc committees.

ABS is the permanent chairman of the Council's Committee on Co-operation in Finance, Investment and Trade (COFIT).

ABS is also in regular communication with banking associations in major financial centres beyond Asean, as well as with global institutions such as the International Chamber of Commerce.

SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication)

SWIFT is an industry owned cooperative supplying secure messaging services and interface software to over 7,000 financial institutions in 194 countries. Its customers are banks, broker-dealers and investment managers. SWIFT also provides these users market infrastructures in payments, treasury, derivatives, securities and trade services. Such services help its customers reduce costs, improve automation and manage risk.

ABS has since 1993 managed the secretariat of the SWIFT User Group in Singapore.

Dr Goh Keng Swee Scholarship Fund

The Association manages the company which was set up with the support of the financial and business community to show its appreciation of Dr Goh's immense contribution to the Singapore economy in general and the development of the city into a premier financial centre of repute in particular. The scholarships awarded for study at Singapore's universities aim to increase the talent pool in the Asia and Pacific region, with recipients representing the bright and promising young from countries within this geographic boundary.

The scholarship is open to students from Brunei, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, PRC, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar.

As the scholars are required to work in Singapore for a while on graduation, their total stay in the country, including their undergraduate days, would enable this coterie to get to know Singaporeans better and also to network with Singapore's own bright and promising.
